2019 Zinfandel

$39.00 per bottle   /   $33.15 club price

This Moon Mountain District Zinfandel has appealing aromas of dried cranberries, fresh strawberries, red plums, and licorice. On the palate, it bursts with notes of white pepper, strawberry rhubarb pie, mixed berry jam, and toasted walnuts.

After handpicking, the fruit was destemmed and sent to tank, but 15% of the grapes were whole cluster co-fermented with the whole berry grapes. The fruit was cold soaked for 5 days, then fermented at an average temperature of 82°F before pressing and aging in seven premium American oak barrels (2 new, 5 neutral) for 14 months. This wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The 2019 vintage was a long, ideal growing season for our Moon Mountain District Zinfandel. Bud break began in late March, leading to a relatively dry Spring with few showers. Summer was also quite warm and long, leading into a steady Autumn harvest season. The consistent summer weather encouraged our Zinfandel to ripen in late September. The fruit was handpicked on September 30th, 2019 at optimal flavors and ripeness. The Zinfandel grapes come from Los Chamizal Vineyard in the Moon Mountain District, which resides at 800 feet elevation. The Moon Mountain District overlooks the Valley of the Moon AVA on the Mayacamas Mountain Range. The Zinfandel budwood comes from a Hambrecht Vineyard selection. The soil profile is fascinating, offering a craggy, fractured basalt (igneous rock), which tells us it was an ancient volcanic lava site. Geologically, basalt is where lava once flowed on the surface of a rocky planet or a moon, hence the “Moon Mountain District”. The vines are 25-30 years old and produce low yields of high-quality Zinfandel grapes.
